What runs on calls
The agent page shows which tools, knowledge bases and calendar tools an AI agent is offered on each engine and kind of call, and the reason when one is not.
An AI agent can have tools (webhooks, integration actions, built-ins such as Send an SMS or Transfer to a person), a knowledge base it searches, calendar tools that check availability and book appointments, and phone menu navigation. Not every one of them runs on every call. The agent page says which do, so nothing is silently left out.
Nothing on this page switches anything on. A knowledge base or a calendar reaches an AI agent only when you attach it to that AI agent.
Where to find it
Open the AI agent in the workspace and choose Tools. Below the tool settings, What runs on calls has one row for each tool the AI agent has, plus its knowledge base search, its calendar tools and phone menu navigation, and one column for each kind of call:
| Column | Which calls |
|---|---|
| Inbound calls | Calls to a number that answers with this AI agent |
| Outbound calls | Calls the AI agent places, campaign calls included |
| Browser test | The test panel on the agent page |
| Homepage demo | Only in the workspace whose AI agents appear in the Skysay homepage demo |
A cell reads Runs when the AI agent is offered that item on such a call. Otherwise it names the reason, and the ? next to it explains it (Tab reaches it, Enter opens it, Escape closes it). The Knowledge section shows the same answer for the knowledge base search, under the attached bases.
The page describes the AI agent as last published. Each row also says when the answer is the same on every engine.
Engines
The answers are shown for the engine selected in the editor. Choose another engine and the panel shows that engine's answers before you publish.
Tools, knowledge bases and calendar tools reach Cascade, Gemini Live and GPT-Live the same way. Two things differ by engine today:
- Workflows. GPT-Live and Gemini Live cannot run a workflow call yet, so an AI agent with a published workflow on one of them has its outbound calls refused before they start (Engine can't run workflows).
- Phone menu navigation. GPT-Live does not navigate phone menus yet (Engine not supported); see Phone menu navigation.
AI agents with a workflow
Outbound calls of an AI agent with a published workflow run the workflow, and a workflow call does not offer the AI agent's own tools, knowledge bases or calendar tools yet. The panel shows Not in workflows yet for them on outbound calls. Phone menu navigation still runs on those calls.
Inbound calls run without the workflow unless you armed a workflow phone test, and so does the browser test on the agent page; the panel shows what runs on them. The homepage demo does not run an AI agent that has a published workflow.
Reasons
| Shown as | Code | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Not in workflows yet | workflow_call | These calls run the published workflow, which does not offer the AI agent's tools, knowledge bases or calendar tools yet. |
| Engine can't run workflows | engine_cannot_run_workflows | These calls run the published workflow and the engine cannot run workflow calls yet, so they are refused before they start. |
| Not on the demo | homepage_demo_refuses_workflows | The homepage demo does not run an AI agent with a published workflow. |
| Too many tools | tool_budget | A call holds at most 32 tool names, counting the built-ins and, on a billed call, the knowledge base search. Until the tools fit, calls are refused, or run without an added built-in (Save a callback) or without phone menu navigation. |
| Invalid tool name | tool_contract_unsafe | Every tool name must be at most 32 lowercase letters, digits and underscores, starting with a letter. Until then, calls are refused. |
| Can't be offered | not_buildable | The voice service cannot offer this entry (an unknown type, a repeated or reserved name, or a schema that is missing or nested more than 32 levels deep). Calls leave it out and record a configured_tool_omitted event. |
| Name taken by the voice service | worker_tool_name | While Follow the caller is on, the voice service adds its own switch_language tool, so a tool of yours with that name is left out. Rename it. |
| No SMS template | sms_templates_missing | SMS is set to templates only and the AI agent has no SMS template. |
| Integration off | integration_unavailable | The integration action, or its integration, is switched off in this project. |
| Calendar not connected | calendar_connection_inactive | The calendar the tools use is not connected and active. Reconnect it under Integrations. |
| Not available yet | calendar_fleet_not_ready | Calendar tools are offered once every running voice server supports them. |
| No ready document | knowledge_not_ready | None of the attached knowledge bases has a processed document yet. |
| Needs a phone call | needs_phone_caller | The tool acts on a phone call (such as a text, a transfer or a callback), and this kind of call has none. On the homepage demo every built-in except ending the call and the calendar tools needs one. |
| Test calendar only | calendar_test_writes_off | A browser test books only on a calendar connection marked as a test calendar with test bookings allowed. Checking availability still works. |
| Outbound only | outbound_only | Phone menu navigation is used only on calls the AI agent places. On an engine that does not navigate, every column says Engine not supported instead. |
Phone menu navigation can also show the reasons its own setting explains, such as Engine not supported or Language not supported; see Phone menu navigation.
What it does not check
The panel says what an AI agent is offered, not what a given call does. Every call still checks that the workspace and the AI agent are not suspended, the balance, permission to call the number, the carrier's SMS support and each tool's own service, and its result is in the call's timeline. A booking still reads the details back and waits for the caller's clear yes; see Calendar booking.
For API clients
The page reads capabilities from the agent editor's workspace read,
GET /v1/dashboard/agent-config; the OpenAPI reference
describes its fields and every reason code.
Agent workflows
Design governed conversations on a visual canvas, compile them into a deterministic runtime contract, and test them by talking, typing, simulating, or phoning before you publish.
Call variables
Give each call its own data — a name, a balance, an appointment — and let the agent's greeting, lines, instructions and SMS templates use it.
